This is a very silly, yet surprisingly informative book about Rio de Janeiro. It includes a few lessons in speaking Brazilian Portuguese that might be helpful for your trip. I’m going to include the chapter titles in this description as a way to give you an insight into what kind of information you can expect to learn if you choose to read this jumble of nonsense. Please enjoy responsibly.
Chapter 1- Staying out of Jail and avoiding scandal ; Learning to act in an appropriate way in order to avoid crime, fighting, illegal activities, and a basic explanation about how to increase your odds of avoiding drunk driving charges (for those who have questionable standards). Bonus notes - extra tidbits about hookers, transvestites, with added and surprising information about motel rentals by the hour.
Chapter 2- The beach! Yay; a basic rundown about beach life and how to have a great time without getting ripped off or sunburned... just kidding about the ripped off part....probably. (Also, you will probably get a sunburn).
Chapter 3- Wining and dining! Eat, drink, and understand what you are ingesting... mostly. Also included in this chapter is some information about bathrooms, Brazilian hygiene, and table manners.
Chapter 4- General Tourism; Things the other guides will not suggest that you do! But seriously, go do that other typical tourist stuff too... just slip this extra list in as well!
Chapter 5- Useful words and phrases! Okay team, lets get learnish just a little.. you’ll be super glad you did!! Then I’ll tell you a little about global trade and Brazilian taxes just to make this chapter extra extra dry!!! Arg... You knew it was coming, just hold your breath and it will be okay.
Chapter 6- I am currently dying... 911 is not an option.. sort of. ??? Lets get some solutions and suggestions on paper for emergency scenarios!!!
Chapter 7- Speaking of Pharmacies, what should you bring to Rio with you?? i.e.. stuff you are used to and can’t get? Should you bring stuff with you? Should you buy some stuff while in Brazil and round out your at home apothecary?
Chapter 8- Hand gestures, and common sense. Body language is a bit different in Brazil, so it might be nice to know about!!! This chapter will also discuss mating rituals. How sure are you that your body language is translating the way you intended? This is a surprisingly important question, so read on before you make an embarrassing mistake!!
Chapter 9- Another obligatory Portuguese lesson... Just because I told you all of this language stuff was included... This is a chapter of useful and boring vocabulary that will help you every day as you navigate life. i.e.. because of your terrible Karma, you will always find English speakers until you are in a ridiculous and problematic scenario. We all know that speaking in English with increased volume and less speed is not always very effective (yes, we have all been ‘that guy’ at one time or another).
Chapter 10- Some useful ideas, websites, and information about travel within the city and country. Also, how to dress like a local in many circumstances (subject to change without announcement...as my Dad always says when teasing me, “fashion before function”).
Chapter 11- Final random thoughts, suggestions, and ideas about why Rio de Janeiro is awesome, confusing, ridiculous, amazing, and the best/worst city ever.
Chapter 12- Some fun sentences and vocabulary. They might not help you function, but man are they fun! All pronunciations are as close as I can get to the Carioca (Rio) accent.

This is a fun little book easy to read . I read it in about an hour. It has a lot of good info in it about Brazil and Rio not found in other travel books
